Interviews

Wector

Over the last few years or so there has been a recent surge in the quality of young producer's and 21 year old, Wector is an example of this. Originally airing from Sweden, Wector's most recent track Resistance has been gaining support from a whole host of DJ's. With a bright future ahead of him and a history of success, we caught up with him for an exclusive interview.

WWEDM: Hello Wector, why don't you start by telling us the basics: where you were born, where you are now, what you are studying?

Wector: Hi there, I was born 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden. I'm currently taking a year off from studying and working as a butcher instead. My plan is to study next fall in Brisbane, Australia for three years.

WWEDM: That's great! The only thing you have been cutting up recently is the genre defining books! So your taking time off studying, does that mean you have more time to produce?

Wector: Yes of course, I'm in my "studio" mostly when I don't work and that can be 2-3 days per week. I would rather sit in my studio every day of the week but that would be terrible for my personal economy.

WWEDM: Wouldn't we all, since I'm a keen producer I definately would. So what sort of equipment do you use in your studio? DAW, midi keyboard etc?

Wector: I only use a macbook, a midi keyboard and two small speakers. It's not really what most people would call a studio but I dont really need a huge room with equipments all over the place. Instead I use alot of different plugins in Logic.

WWEDM: Well whatever suits you is all that matters, after all the plugins in Logic superceed a lot of physical equipment. What sort of plugins do you use in Logic?

Wector: The plugins that I work most with are Sylenth and Massive. And then I use different kinds of compressors, Dada Lifes Sausage Fattener and Ozone to get the sound that I want.

WWEDM: Brilliant, just the sort of information we were after. How do you feel the last few months of your life has gone so far as productions are concerned?

Wector: Well, I've always wanted to make the next track better then the last one so the last few months I've tried to learn everything about producing House music and mostly Electro House. So I think I've made some progress this last few months with the quality and my own sound. When I listen to stuff I've made 6 months ago I cant really understand how i thought that sounded good in my ears once upon a time.

WWEDM: Well if your next track goes under the philosophy that you have, it will be a world beater! I haven't heard many of your older songs, but the one's I have heard are exceptional. Do you just produce House, or have you ventured into other genres too?

Wector: I love Electro so thats what I want to produce so I dont do other genres, maybe some Dubstep in the future perhaps.

WWEDM: Electro is a favourite amongst us at WWEDM, we think that the best music incorporates all different genres into it! Anyway, so you've had a successful year just past, what things do you have planned for the coming year? Or will you just go with the flow?

Wector: I have no plans to take over the world any time soon but I will try to produce music that people with the same taste as me enjoy. So yep, just go with the flow.

WWEDM: Awesome! Well continue on the same tracks and you'll be master of the world.  Do you prefer the DJing or the producing side of things?

Wector: That sounds promising haha! Im not much of a DJ, but if the results of my producing get better and better I will consider starting DJing.

WWEDM: Focusing on productions will certainly you in good stress for the future! I'm sure your fans will want to know who are your inspirations?

Wector: Jeremy Olander, Zedd, Nicky Romero, Mord Fustang and of course Swedish House Mafia and many more!

WWEDM: I personally like all of them, SHM are my favourite all time producers. Well it's been great interviewing you, Wector! Keep doing what your doing and you won't be unsigned for long. We will keep in touch, feel free to send any new tracks over so we can put them on our blog!

Wector: Of course man! Thanks for all kind words.

Alexander Engström

Sweden had been known for being the home of Electronic Dance Music in recent time, so when Swedish producer Alexander Engström broke onto the scene, no one was surprised. However the unique tracks he creates fusing percussive melodies and a high energy input did the complete opposite. With solo track Tonight, We Are Swedish being released on beatport and other released in the offing, WWEDM decided we wanted to catch up with Alex after hearing his very first output, so we did.

WWEDM: Hello Alex, let's start off with an introduction to you, tell us the basics: where you were born, where you are now and what you are studying?

A.E: I'm 18 years old, born 1993 in a town in northern Sweden named Örnsköldsvik but now I live and study in a town named Östersund. Ive been playing piano since I was around 10 and have produced music since I was 12. But I started to produce house this summer!

WWEDM: Awesome! You have extremely melodic tracks, is that because of your backgroung with piano and does that background help in your productions?

A.E: Yes it does. I always play around with my midi keyboard and when I find a melody I like, I use it in a song! It also helps me understanding chords, scales etc!

WWEDM: Cool stuff. You talked about using your midi keyboard? Could you tell us what equipment setup you use? i.e. DAW, type of keyboard etc. Also, what plugins do you like to use when making a track?

A.E: Yeah, i'm using a M-Audio Keyrig 49, an audio interface, daw-controller from Behringer and some other stuff. I'm using FL Studio and use a lot of synths, but I like Nexus a lot!

WWEDM: Interesting, the writers at WWEDM are keen producers and we also use FL Studio. Do you have any tips for the young aspiring producers out there?

A.E: Yeah, I think its a great idea to do remakes of songs you like. Try to copy a song you like, you will learn a lot!

WWEDM: We will keep that in mind. What does it feel like to finally get some recognition for the work you've done? And who are your inspirations, I'm guessing Avicii is one?

A.E: Avicii is a big inspiration. But I have found a lot of other producers lately that inspires me. David Guetta, Afrojack, Axwell, Alesso and my new favourite R3hab! R3hab is awesome!

WWEDM: Who are your Top 10 artists to watch at the moment?

    A.E:
1. R3hab
2. Avicii
3. Alesso
4. Sia (She always has amazing vocals)
5. Axwell
6. Nicky Romero
7. Bingo Players
8. Basto
9. David Guetta
10. Hardwell

WWEDM: Great! I agree with all them, they are favoured amongst the writers here too! I really like your tracks, they are very melodic and I like that. So you've talked about your music, have you thought about collaborating with anyone in the future? After the success you have had with both "Miles Away" with Audio Sonic and 3's Better Than 1 and "Love Me Like You Do It" with Benceee, it must be on the cards surely?

A.E: Well, I am a control freak and I like to do everything myself. But I wanna do a song with my friend Benjamin Johannson. We grew up together and he's doing house aswell!

WWEDM: Much like myself then! I will check him out later! You mentioned that you have only been producing house music since summer. How far do you think you have come in that short space of time and what can we expect from you this year?

A.E: I think I have come pretty far. When i'm bored I google my own name and I always find a lot of fun stuff from blogs and websites. I did not expect that when I started, but its fun! What you can expect from me, well I dont know, I will work as hard as I can and hopefully I will release some really good tracks!

WWEDM: Well we are all very very excited to see what comes out your camp this year! Do you have any words for your fans out there before you go?

A.E: Yeah, I really really love everyone that loves my music. It's pointless to do music if no one likes it! So i'm really glad people support me!

WWEDM: Brilliant, and thanks again for the interview! Good luck for the future and we'll stay in contact for sure.
